The purpose of Bayakha Collective is to curate and sell rare and unique objects from Southern Africa. The collection exhibits a contemporary version of ancestral techniques that represent proudly South African culture and aesthetics.
The word “bayakha” is borrowed from isiZulu, which translates to “we create”.
The MAISHA tables are contemporary creations that were exhibited for the 1st time in the South African stand at the ‘Révélations’ craft art fair at Le Grand Palais in Paris in May 2019.
For several generations, master weavers of the Kwazulu Natal have been creating the traditional Zulu baskets woven with dried Ilala palm from the wetlands. Each piece is unique in shape and design. The colour of the fibres is obtained through a natural colouring/dying process.
